Now that Harbour is almost two and a half and she doesn’t love being worn much anymore, I don’t get to indulge my baby carrier addiction like I used to. Well, more accurately, I shouldn’t indulge my baby carrier addiction like I used to. What can I say? Some habits are hard to break.
Since my therapy hasn’t kicked in yet, I’m known to buy carriers in moments of weakness. I swear, no matter how hard I try to hide my giddy excitement, Harbour knows what’s going on the minute I skip into the house with a new package. She knows that she’s doomed to be my guinea pig for the next hour or so and she desperately tries to wedges herself behind the bed where I can’t reach her.
Oh, silly child. I sell baby carriers. My day job to spread the love of babywearing. Your lot in life was sealed before you were even born.
Luckily for me, I was blessed with two children and for some reason, River has managed to exist for five years through photosynthesis and an occasional meal of chicken nuggets. This works out to my benefit – she not only is very easy on my grocery budget, but she weighs a scant 37lbs. When Harbour refuses to be worn, River happily climbs on my back. She thinks being the “baby” part of babywearing is hilarious. So on I go, buying new carriers as “research” and wondering how feasible it is to wear one of my cats once River actually passes 45lbs.
Recently I’ve been able to try two new buckle carriers – one is the Emeibaby carrier and the second is the Moby Go (which I hope to review next week if I can). I was very excited when Emeibaby offered to send me a carrier for review, especially after seeing people rave about it in Europe. The company promotes it as a hybrid carrier, and it definitely looks like a cross between a buckle carrier/ring sling/woven wrap. The idea behind the Emeibaby is that you can achieve a good seat with your child’s knees nice and high, regardless of your child’s size – this usually isn’t possible in a mainstream buckle carrier.
Good Positioning in a Baby Carrier
Curious to know what a “good seat” looks like? Check out this excellent picture of a well-wrapped baby on the JPMBB website, a company that makes stretchy wraps. Can you can see from these images how the bum is well supported by the wrap and the knees are up high?
This great positioning is hard to achieve in a buckle carrier because babies change so much from month to month. When a baby is first born he may prefer to keep his knees close together, only spreading his legs farther apart as he grows bigger and is able to straddle the parent more more easily. Ring slings and wraps are versatile enough to support children in a perfect position regardless of child’s size, but buckle carriers are often too structured and rigid to offer this flexibility.
Emeibaby carriers are different because they feature an adjustable body; the fabric in the body can be slowly let out to give your child more room and a deeper seat as she gets bigger, keeping the child’s weight on the bum and offering support up to the knees. I couldn’t wait to try it for myself.
SO HOW WAS IT?
